On the latest episode of the Claret and Blue podcast, Dan Rolinson and James Rushton were joined by Brentford fan Billy Grant to discuss the recent signing of Ollie Watkins, as well as some of the other transfer rumours surrounding Aston Villa.

One topic of discussion on the recent podcast was Villa’s potential interest in signing another striker before the transfer window shuts. The Villans completed a £28 million move for Brentford’s Ollie Watkins recently, although those on the podcast seem to feel that this won’t be the only striker signed in the summer transfer window.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

One player mentioned is Bournemouth’s Josh King, who has been linked with a move to Villa Park recently, whilst Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster is also suggested as a potential option, with the 20-year-old having been linked with a potential move to the Birmingham club.

Here’s what Rushton had to say about the Villa’s interest in signing another forward in the summer transfer window on the podcast:

“I think it’s been very clearly stated that Villa want a midfielder, another striker and a winger. So you’ve got three positions there everyone wants filled, at the very least. So it’s another marquee striker eventually coming in, whether it’s Josh King, Rhian Brewster, whomever they choose. I think that’s going to be one on the back-burner right now, you’ve got Watkins, possibly a winger. I think Villa will be smart to wait for any deals that may come up that are a bit cheaper [rather] than launching all their cash at other people.”

TIF Thoughts…

Rushton seems to think that although Villa are keen to sign another forward, they may wait to see what deals arise later in the window, due to their big-money signing of Watkins earlier this week.

Considering Wesley is edging closer to a return from the knee injury that has kept him out since January, perhaps Dean Smith will have the Brazilian, alongside Mbwana Samatta and Keinan Davis (per Transfermarkt), as potential back-ups to Watkins next season, suggesting that perhaps another striker isn’t a priority right now.

It will be interesting to see whether the Birmingham club do bring in another forward before the end of the transfer window in October.
