Speaking recently on The Chronicles of a Gooner podcast, Adrian Clarke claimed that Arsenal may ‘have to’ sell Matteo Guendouzi if they want to bring in better players this summer.

Since joining Arsenal from FC Lorient in what was a £7.2 million deal back in 2018, Guendouzi has gone on to make 82 appearances for the Gunners, scoring one goal and providing five assists along the way.

Can you score 20/20 on this Premier League quiz? Starting off easy, who is the top scorer in the Premier League this season?

Last season, however, the 21-year-old did not exactly set the world alight with his performances, providing one assist over his 24 Premier League appearances, averaging a slightly disappointing WhoScored match rating of 6.69/10 – ranking him as the club’s 13th-best performer in the league.

And, it would appear that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is ready to part with the midfielder this summer, although Paris Saint-Germain, who had been linked with a move for the player, are reported to have recently turned down the opportunity to sign the 21-year-old.

However, Clarke believes that Arsenal must sell the player over this transfer window if the club want to bring in better players.

Speaking on The Chronicles of a Gooner podcast, he said: “He’s not a bad player at all, but the bottom line is we’ve identified better players, and if it means we have to sell Guendouzi to get that player, then I think we have to do that.

“I don’t think, given the current situation financially at the club, it’s going to be a perfect world here. There’s not going to be an ideal situation where we sign the players we want and we keep everybody that we want. There are going to be some good players, some players that might turn out to be absolute gems and kick on – maybe Serge Gnabry-style – and come back to bite us, that might happen, but for the here and now, to bring in the players we need, then some are going to have to go.”

TIF Thoughts…

From Clarke’s comments, it would appear as if he believes that Arsenal will have to sell Guendouzi in order to bring in the players that Arsenal need this summer.

However, considering the player’s current Transfermarkt value of £28.8 million, alongside his distinctly average performances last season, selling Guendouzi for a price that Arsenal would be happy to accept, in our opinion, could be a difficult thing to do.
