The Sunderland Echo journalist Phil Smith has been discussing Sunderland’s Will Grigg and the transfer link between the striker and Swindon Town.

In January, it was reported by The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, as cited by the Swindon Advertiser, that the Robins were interested in signing the Northern Irishman.

However, it was stated that the move would be a loan deal and not a permanent transfer.

A recent report by The Sun, as cited by the Sunderland Echo, has stated that Swindon have made another enquiry about the forward this summer.

So, in the latest episode of The Roar Podcast, Smith discussed the transfer link and aired his thoughts on if there would be any value in a loan move for Grigg this summer.

He said: “There were reports on Sunday that Swindon had looked at [Grigg], I think that was mentioned in January as well, wasn’t it? Actually Swindon were one of the teams that were linked with him.

“Ultimately, that kind of move just isn’t going to work because of the salary cap, it’s pointless Sunderland letting Will Grigg go on a loan deal.

“The only way that it makes sense to move Will Grigg on is if you get a fee that you can reinvest in somebody else.

“So, I just don’t see [it]. A loan in the salary cap world, to me, just makes absolutely no sense because I don’t see how it helps Sunderland.

“So, it’s one of those where you think you’ve got to try and make this work and credit to Will, in terms of his condition, he’s obviously come back ready to make it work.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, he clearly believes that it would not make any sense for the Black Cats to loan out Grigg due to the recently announced salary cap.

Should Sunderland loan Will Grigg to Swindon Town?

Yes, it's a good idea

No, not a good idea

No, not a good idea

With the Northern Irishman having bagged just eight goals in 49 appearances for Sunderland (per Transfermarkt), hopefully, during the 2020/21 season, he can begin to repay the £3.06m it took to get him to the Stadium of Light.
