David Edgar and Andy McGowan discussed all the latest goings-on with Rangers on the most recent edition of the Heart and Hand podcast and spent some time talking about the Gers’ win over Aberdeen last Saturday.

Steven Gerrard’s side got their 2020/21 Scottish Premiership campaign off to a positive start as they earned a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen thanks to a 21st-minute Ryan Kent goal.

Alfredo Morelos, whose future has been cast in doubt of late as reports have been linking him with a move to Ligue 1 side Lille, provided the assist for Kent’s goal, and during this recent edition of the Heart and Hand podcast, McGowan spent some time talking about Morelos and his fitness based on last Saturday’s game.

McGowan said: “He’s not overweight – to say he’s overweight would be ridiculous – but he’s definitely not as lean as he was at the start of last season when I made [a] comment that he was ‘Premiership-lean.’

“By that, I meant that you see players go down from Scotland to the English [Premier League], sometimes the Championship, and within six months they’re cut and they just look different and they look a bit bigger built and they’re more powerful.

“Last year, Morelos kind of looked like that. This year, he’s back to his normal self, if you like – and he’s just off the pace in terms of being able to beat his man, get his shot away, that kind of stuff that he did so well for the first half of last season.”

Do you think that Alfredo Morelos is fit enough at the moment?

TIF Thoughts…

While McGowan seems to believe that Morelos is not at his best possible level of fitness at present, it may be fair to say that this didn’t seem to have too much of a negative impact on his overall performance against Aberdeen, as the 24-year-old provided the assist for Rangers’ goal and earned the third-highest average overall rating (7.93/10) of any Rangers player against the Dons, as per WhoScored.

Furthermore, Morelos completed the second-highest number of dribbles (three) and was fouled the joint-highest number of times (four) of any Rangers player last Saturday, so it may have been somewhat harsh of McGowan to criticise the Colombian’s ability to “beat his man” against Aberdeen.
