Pundit Tam Cowan has recently made a claim about David Turnbull’s recent move to Premiership giants Celtic.

Cowan was a guest on the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show and the panel discussed many issues involving Celtic and Scottish football. They discussed many transfers in the Scottish game and they also focused on Turnbull’s recent Parkhead switch. Cowan believes that the Celtic move may not be a big step-up for Turnbull since he is moving between clubs that are playing in the UEFA Europa League.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

Turnbull has joined Celtic for an undisclosed fee and the Scotsman was close to sealing a Parkhead move in the summer of 2019 itself. The move collapsed as the medical revealed that he had to undergo knee surgery.

Cowan talked about this move and he believes that the move isn’t a big step up for the midfielder because Motherwell are playing in the qualifying stages of the Europa League and as a result of Celtic’s loss to Ferencvaros, they’ll be playing in that competition as well.

Cowan said: “I just think it is a great move for everyone. We knew it was going to happen. This was hardly a huge shock because we had the full dress rehearsal for this last season until sadly David failed his medical at Celtic.

Is Turnbull a future Celtic star?

“For any of the cynics out there that reckon it is a big step-up for David Turnbull, I’ll remind them that he is moving from one Europa League club to another.”

TIF Thoughts…

While Motherwell are playing in the qualifying stages of the Europa League this season, Turnbull hasn’t quite played in the competition in his career. While he does offer a lot of experience of playing in the Premiership, Turnbull is yet to play in European competition (as per Transfermarkt).

It remains to be seen how this lack of European experience impacts his tenure at Celtic, but Turnbull started the 2020/21 season well with Motherwell and Celtic fans can only hope that he keeps that run of form going when he starts playing for the Bhoys.
