Pundit Hugh MacDonald has recently been talking about Odsonne Edouard and has given his verdict about whether the striker will stay at Celtic this summer or not.

MacDonald was a guest on the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show podcast and he was asked about the future of Edouard and whether he would remain at Parkhead beyond this summer or not. The pundit went on to express his opinion about the situation.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

Edouard began the 2020/21 season in some style, as he grabbed a hat-trick in Celtic’s 5-1 win over Hamilton Academical in the Premiership on Sunday (as per BBC Sport).

When talking about Edouard, MacDonald said: “My very, very strong feeling [pre-pandemic], and I made the calls on this, there was a very strong feeling that Edouard would leave this summer. That was the very strong feeling.

“[The pandemic] has changed everything. I think the Celtic narrative to Edouard will be, ‘stay on for another year, we’ve got an offer on the table here for a contract, we’re going to build your wages and we won’t be harder to deal with next summer when clubs will definitely be in a position to come in.

“Things will be more stable. You’ll have more choice of the club that you want to go to, because you’ll have another season under your belt and things economically will be more stable. At the moment, I would say it was 60-40 on him staying. ”

Can anyone sign Edouard this summer?

Yes, they can

MacDonald believes that the pandemic has changed Edouard’s situation and if not for that, he looked destined for a Celtic exit. The pundit now sees the Frenchman staying at Parkhead beyond this summer.

TIF Thoughts…

Edouard initially joined Celtic on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017, but the move to Parkhead was made permanent in the summer of 2018 (as per Transfermarkt).

Since initially joining, the Frenchman has directly contributed to 94 goals in 127 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops. He has racked up a tally of 63 goals and has 31 assists to his name (as per Transfermarkt).

He’s clearly an important player for the Bhoys and could be key to helping them win their tenth league title in a row this season. So selling him at this point in time makes little sense for Celtic.
