Celtic legend Chris Sutton has recently made a claim about Scott Bain and his status in the current first team.

Sutton was recently a guest on the latest episode of the Record Celtic podcast and he talked about many issues surrounding the Parkhead outfit. One thing he focused on was Bain and how he views the goalkeeper in the current Celtic first-team setup.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

Bain recently played for the Hoops in their 5-1 win over Hamilton, in what was the club’s first Premiership game of the campaign.

While giving his verdict about Bain and his situation at Parkhead, Sutton said: “I don’t have the total confidence in him. Of course, you look back at Fraser Forster last season – arguably Odsonne Edouard was Player of the Season, but I always felt when Forster was in goal that he was assured. He was confident, he wasn’t going to make major errors. He wasn’t going to let soft goals in. Of course, all goalkeepers will have the odd mistake. I never got that feeling with Fraser Forster that it would be continuous mistakes and letting soft goals in.

Is Bain good enough to be Celtic's first-choice goalkeeper?

“And with what’s at stake this season, Celtic need to have a top goalkeeper. I don’t put Scott Bain in that bracket. This isn’t a personal attack on Scott Bain. I think that he’s a very capable goalkeeper, but we’re talking about playing for Celtic at this moment in time and I still think he’s got a lot of work to do if he wants to be regarded as a number one.”

Sutton believes that Bain perhaps isn’t good enough to be Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper and the Hoops need someone who falls in the bracket of being a ‘top goalkeeper’, but Bain doesn’t meet that requirement.

TIF Thoughts…

While Bain, who is valued at £540k (Transfermarkt), did start on Sunday, he wasn’t a regular for the Hoops in the 2019/20 season. He made only eight appearances in all competitions and played only two games in the Premiership. Fraser Forster had become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and that could say a lot about how Neil Lennon views Bain.

Celtic have signed Vasilis Barkas from AEK Athens and that makes the situation even tougher for Bain. It could be a sign that the 28-year-old Scotsman might have to stick to being a back-up once again and Barkas takes over the first-choice role soon. So it will be intriguing how Celtic’s goalkeeping situation pans out in the next few weeks.
