Charlie Adam has given his verdict about Celtic target Shane Duffy and whether the Hoops can sign the defender this summer.

Adam was a guest on the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show and the panel talked about many issues involving Scottish football. They also talked about potential Celtic transfers, with Adam sharing his opinion on the Brighton defender. Adam said that Duffy is a ‘massive Celtic fan’, but he also believes that affording his wages could be a problem for the Hoops.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

According to the Daily Mail, Duffy has been linked with a Parkhead switch and it is thought that the Brighton and Hove Albion man has talked to Neil Lennon about joining Celtic on a one-year loan. The Seagulls want a loan fee of £2million to let Duffy go this summer, though West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion and Burnley are also interested in him.

Adam stated that Duffy happens to be a big Hoops supporter, but he raised concerns about whether the Bhoys can afford his salary.

He said: “[I’m] only hearing that he sung a few Celtic songs on his holidays and he was enjoying himself. I know he’s a massive Celtic fan.

Should Celtic avoid the Duffy move?

“If I’m Celtic, the problem will come down to his wages. He’s on big wages at Brighton. [A] £2 million loan fee plus maybe paying half of his salary – we are talking another £1.5 million. It is £3 million for a player for a season – a lot of money for Celtic. It is not like an investment where you’re going to get long-term [return].”

TIF Thoughts…

28-year-old Duffy made 21 appearances in all competitions for Brighton in the 2019/20 season and made 40 appearances in the season before. It shows that he knows what it takes to play regular first-team football at the top level.

The Daily Record recently published a report about Duffy and a source had suggested that while the defender is a ‘massive Celtic supporter’, this could be a ‘very difficult’ deal for the Bhoys. The source said that it is ‘impossible’ to compete with the Premier League clubs when it comes to wages (as per the Daily Record), which goes in line with Adam’s theory.

This also suggests that signing Duffy won’t be an easy task for the Hoops and they may have to fend off competition from English clubs in order to sign him – so it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
