Broadcaster Ger Gilroy has recently made a claim about Odsonne Edouard and his future at Celtic.

Gilroy was present on the latest edition of OTB AM’s Deal or No Deal segment, along with Eoin Sheahan and Phil Egan. The panel talked about many potential transfers in European football. One potential transfer they discussed was that of Edouard, with the Frenchman being linked with a move to Premier League side Aston Villa.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

Edouard has started the 2020/21 campaign pretty well. He scored a hat-trick in Celtic’s first game of the Premiership season, helping them to a 5-1 win against Hamilton Academical, and netted in the Hoops’ recent 6-0 win over KR Reykjavik in a UEFA Champions League first-round qualifier (as per Transfermarkt).

It has been reported by The Sun that Villa currently have some cash to ‘tempt’ Edouard and Dean Smith ‘wants to find out’ if Villa can sign the Frenchman this summer or not.

Gilroy had some things to say when it comes to Edouard and his future ahead of the transfer window shutting in October. He said: “I think if you look at the players who have moved from Celtic recently to the Premier League, some of them have done okay. I think Kieran Tierney is starting to come good and I think Virgil [van Dijk]’s obviously been a sensation.

“I know that Celtic don’t expect to have him [Edouard] playing for them whenever the transfer window closes, that he will be gone, that there are enough Premier League teams who are looking at it. I don’t know how he performed in the European games. I’d like to see the split of SPL versus European games.”

TIF Thoughts…

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has already confirmed that the club is in talks to hand Edouard a new deal. He had even hailed the manner in which the Frenchman has developed at Parkhead.

Football Insider have also already reported that the Hoops are ‘increasingly hopeful’ of getting Edouard to sign a new deal at Celtic. That report claimed that the Bhoys are ‘making progress’ in handing the striker a new contract soon, even though no agreement has been reached yet.

These are pretty promising signs for Celtic. Clubs like Arsenal and Leicester City have also been linked with Edouard but the updates give the impression that the striker might just stay at Parkhead.
