Celtic legend Chris Sutton has given his verdict about the club’s chase of former Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher.

Sutton was a guest on the latest episode of the Record Celtic podcast and he talked about many things involving the Parkhead side. As well as giving his verdict on Celtic’s 5-1 win over Hamilton Academical on Sunday, the Hoops legend talked about the rumours linking Celtic with a move for Fletcher.

The Daily Record recently reported that the Scottish veteran is on Celtic’s shortlist for attacking options this summer. The report also claimed that initial contact has already been made with Fletcher’s representatives.

Would Fletcher be a good signing for Celtic?

While talking about these links, Sutton said:

“I think it’s a good option. I’ve always rated him as a player from his early days at Hibs. I think he’s really developed where he may have been a little bit raw then but he has an eye for goal. What I like about him is that he’ll nick goals, but he’s such a good team player, such a good focal point, such a good link man.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

“He’s very, very slick. He’s so tidy holding the ball and he’s got good awareness of what’s in and around him and at 33, I know he looks after himself and conditions himself very, very well. He’s in the gym a couple of times a week, he knows what it takes, he’s a good pro. He knows he’s not going to play week in and week out because Odsonne Edouard is the main man, but if you want to give Edouard a rest at times, then he’s a near-perfect replacement.”

Sutton clearly believes that Fletcher would be a good signing for the Hoops and he could also prove to be a reliable replacement for Edouard whenever the Frenchman isn’t playing. Despite Fletcher’s age, Sutton appears to have no real concerns about this signing.

TIF Thoughts…

Fletcher spent the 2019/20 season at Sheffield Wednesday and he was there from the summer of 2016, but his deal at the club ran out recently. So the striker is currently a free agent (as per Transfermarkt).

In the 2019/20 season, Fletcher made 30 appearances in all competitions for the Owls. He found the net 13 times and got two assists. All 13 goals came in the Championship, in which he played 27 games (as per Transfermarkt).

So Fletcher is clearly a capable player. With Vakoun Issouf Bayo being linked with a move to St. Mirren, Fletcher might be a good option to add depth in the striking department for Celtic.
