Pundit Tam McManus has recently made a claim about Celtic’s approach for West Ham United striker Albian Ajeti.

McManus was present as a guest on the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show. The panel talked about multiple issues surrounding Scottish football and one thing that McManus chose to focus on was Ajeti and whether Celtic can still sign him this summer.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

It was initially reported that Celtic had reached an agreement with West Ham to sign the £4.32 million-rated Ajeti on a loan deal and they were also meant to have an option to buy him permanently. The striker then took some time to make a decision and as a result, the move was being held up.

When talking about whether the Ajeti deal can still happen, McManus said: “Ajeti from West Ham, I think that deal is dead now. I think Neil Lennon was pretty annoyed that he wanted more time. If you want to come to Celtic, if Celtic come in for you, you go straight away. You don’t have time to think about other options.

Do you think the Ajeti deal is dead in the water?

Yes

Yes

No, we can still get him

No, we can still get him

“So I think that’s clouded that [deal] for Celtic. Ivan Toney is definitely the main guy that Celtic want to bring in.”

McManus believes that Celtic won’t sign Ajeti now and the fact that he is taking time to decide his destination left Neil Lennon ‘annoyed’. He also feels that Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney is one of the Hoops’ main targets.

TIF Thoughts…

Ajeti had joined West Ham from Basel in the summer of 2019, but the Swiss forward failed to impress at the London club. He couldn’t score even once for the side and played only 130 minutes of first-team football in the Premier League (as per Transfermarkt).

Vakoun Bayo has been linked with a move to St. Mirren and if he does leave, Celtic might need another striker as his potential replacement. So in that sense, missing out on Ajeti will be a blow for the Hoops. So focusing on other targets now might be a good idea.
