Podcaster Chris Sermanni has given his verdict about Ivan Toney and whether Celtic should sign the Peterborough United striker.

Sermanni was a guest on the latest episode of The Cynic podcast and the panel discussed many things involving the Parkhead side. Sermanni was asked about Toney and if the Hoops should the striker this summer or not.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

The Hoops have already had a bid rejected for Toney and it was reported that Brentford are now ‘close’ to striking an agreement with the Posh to sign the 24-year-old forward.

When talking about Toney and whether he’d be a viable signing for the Bhoys, Sermanni said: “Basically, if it is a shootout between us and an English Premier League club, transfer fee-wise, we are pretty screwed. Or, we would have to match them and convince them that coming here, you’ve got a real chance at trophies and you’re going to play European football.

Would signing Toney be a risky move for Celtic?

Yes, that will be risky

Yes, that will be risky

No, there's no risk at all

No, there's no risk at all

“So I think it is dependent on that. Obviously, at Peterborough –  your man [Barry] Fry, he is not shy at going to the press. He could be artificially inflating this or whatever. Again, it is a risk. For a club like us, if you are paying £8-9 million for any player, it’s a risk.”

Sermanni believes that Celtic would be taking a risk by shelling out big money on Toney and they might not be able to compete with a club like Brentford when it comes to affording the transfer fee. Toney is currently valued at £360k only.

TIF Thoughts…

Toney was in good goalscoring form for Peterborough in the 2019/20 season and he found the back of the net 26 times in all competitions for them. In the league, he scored 24 goals in 32 games and even racked up six assists (as per Transfermarkt).

Those are very impressive numbers and for the Posh overall, Toney has scored a total of 49 goals and provided 15 assists in 94 appearances. That says a lot about how he’s a reliable goalscorer and he could add a lot of goals to the Celtic first-team. While Celtic’s £5 million bid was rejected and they might have to spend higher to sign Toney, his goalscoring record suggests that this might be a risk worth taking.
