Podcaster Chris Sermanni has recently been talking about Greg Taylor and has given his opinion about the Celtic left-back.

Sermanni was part of the panel on the latest episode of The Cynic podcast. The panel talked about many issues surrounding the Parkhead club. One thing that they focused on was the club’s left-back situation, how Taylor did against Hamilton and what the future might have in store for the Scotsman.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

Taylor grabbed a couple of assists against Hamilton on Sunday, helping the Hoops pick up a 5-1 win. Odsonne Edouard racked up an impressive hat-trick as well.

When talking about Taylor, Sermanni said: “I called him ‘vanilla’ in terms of: he’s fine as a second-choice full-back or whatever and he will get better, that was maybe a wee bit harsh on him, but he’s not done enough for me, and we need to remember that it was Hamilton that we were playing. It wasn’t a team in the upper echelons of the league or in Europe.

Do Celtic need an upgrade on Greg Taylor?

Yes, we need an upgrade

No, Taylor is good enough

“He’s not done enough for me to think that we could rely on him as a first-choice left-back. I would be happy if we got somebody in of a higher level where he could challenge him and push for it – because he will develop, he’s still young and there are assets there. I don’t want to write the guy off, but I would be far more comfortable if we got somebody in of some better quality.”

TIF Thoughts…

Taylor, who is now valued at £720k (as per Transfermarkt), had joined Celtic from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2019, but he wasn’t a regular in the 2019/20 season. He made only 12 Premiership appearances and got as many as five assists (as per Transfermarkt).

His overall numbers for Celtic are pretty promising, in terms of the number of goals he has contributed to. He has racked up seven assists in 17 appearances. In that sense, he has done enough for the club in a limited number of games and since he is 22, Taylor can still improve. It will be intriguing to see how he progresses if he gets regular first-team football this season.
