The Express and Star journalist Joe Edwards has recently aired criticism of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Portuguese attacker Diogo Jota.

Over the duration of the 2019/20 Premier League season, Jota bagged seven goals and one assist for the Old Gold in 34 league appearances (per WhoScored).

Jota’s record in the most recent season falls some way short of his nine goals and five assists in 33 Premier League appearances during the 2018/19 season (per WhoScored).

So, in the latest episode of the E&S Wolves Podcast, Edwards aired some criticism of the 23-year-old attacker’s form in the most recent season.

To kick-off this quiz on Nuno Espirito Santo on the hard side, which club was his first game on the touchline at Molineux against?

He said: “I think it’s [not starting in the 1-0 defeat to Sevilla] a bit of a… we talk about wake-up calls, it’s a bit of one for Jota, isn’t it?

“We all love him because on his day, he’s amazing, and on his day he’s my most enjoyable Wolves player to watch. I love watching him. When he’s at full flow, there’s no one else like him.

“He just hasn’t been like that for long enough over the course of the season, really, he’s been poor since the restart, but he’s endured a lot of blips.

“I think [he’s had] different six, seven and eight-game barren spells in the Premier League.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what Edwards had to say, he clearly believes that Jota has been delivering under-par performances this season.

Do you think that Diogo Jota has been disappointing this season?

Yes, not been good enough

No, he's done well enough

No, he's done well enough

The journalist’s opinion is certainly vindicated by the Portuguese forward’s average ratings in the Premier League over the two most recent seasons.

During the 2018/19 term, Jota delivered a solid 6.89/10 average rating whereas, during the 2019/20 season, he turned in a 6.76/10 average rating (per WhoScored).

So, it is clear to see that the attacker underperformed AS compared to what he proved he was capable of in the 2018/19 season.
