The Athletic reporter Tim Spiers has aired his belief that Wolverhampton Wanderers need a ‘rethink’ regarding their squad depth.

Over the 2019/20 season, the Old Gold sunk £109.62m into incoming transfers and sealed the permanent arrival of nine players (per Transfermarkt).

However, over the 59 games which the club played in all competitions, Wolves only had 21 players make more than five appearances (per Transfermarkt).

So, in the latest episode of The Athletic’s The Molineux View podcast, Spiers discussed the squad depth at Wolves and aired his belief that a “rethink” from Nuno Espirito Santo may be needed.

To kick-off this quiz on Nuno Espirito Santo on the hard side, which club was his first game on the touchline at Molineux against?

He said: “If he’s still their manager in a year’s time and they’re back in the Europa League or they’re back in the Champions League, I think they need to have a bit of a rethink about their squad depth, because I know he loves his 18/19-man squad, but I think that’s almost what’s cost them, really, in the last few weeks.

“They were two points off the Champions League with six games to go, they’ve dropped off, they scraped by against Olympiacos – they were lucky to win that game.

“And then, they just couldn’t really lay a glove on Sevilla in that second half [on Tuesday] at all. This is not [a] criticism, this is just facts.

“I am the biggest fan of what Nuno has done and what Wolves have done this season, but they just ran out of steam, that’s all. So, they need to have a little bit of a think about that.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, he clearly believes that the Old Gold need to improve their squad depth during this summer’s transfer window.

However, with less than a month to go until the new season begins (per Premier League), Wolves do not have long to act in the transfer market to get deals done.

So, unfortunately, several incoming signings to improve Wolves’ squad depth may not be possible before the beginning of the season. It remains to be seen how they operate in the market this summer.
