On the latest episode of the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Ricky Sacks and John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose welcomed former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson on as a guest.

The current Nottingham Forest ace discussed a number of topics during the show, which was titled ‘Michael Dawson – Special’, one of which was the 36-year-old’s first-team debut for the Lilywhites.

The former England international completed a move from Forest to Spurs in January 2005 and would make his debut for the north London club away at Liverpool later that year, with the game finishing 2-2, although it is perhaps best remembered for a wonder-goal from Erik Edman (per BBC).

Here’s what Dawson had to say about his debut at Anfield on the podcast:

“[I was] just absolutely buzzing. I remember [in the] morning he named the team and I was in it and I phoned my mum and dad. They were coming to watch the game anyway, [I said] ‘look, I’m starting,’ and I’m sure their hearts and stomachs had the buzz that I had because to see their son playing and going to Anfield anyway, it’s a great place to play football.

“The atmosphere is just incredible and like you say, with Erik scoring that goal, wow – to get a 2-2 draw was a good result. From a personal point of view, to get your debut for Spurs and get a good result, I was absolutely buzzing.

“We flew back to London and you go back to your flat and you get home and you’re thinking [about] something that you’ve achieved and that was, for me, the biggest buzz ever. It’s just really exciting times for any young lad, and you’ve got to try and enjoy that because you’re blinking and your career has gone past you, so it was certainly a special day in my Spurs career.”

TIF Thoughts…

Dawson clearly has fond memories of his first-team debut at Spurs and, of course, he would go on to make many more, with the centre-back racking up 324 appearances for the Lilywhites during his time at the club, before joining Hull City in 2014.

It was clearly a special occasion for the Englishman to make his debut at Anfield and to come away with a good result and it is no doubt something that he will treasure for a long time.
