Pundit Phil Egan has recently made a claim about Paulo Dybala and if Spurs should look to make a move for the Argentine once again.

Egan was recently present as a guest on the latest episode of The Football Show on Off the Ball podcast. He discussed multiple potential transfers in English football and one thing that the pundit focused on was Dybala and if Spurs should try to sign the Juventus man once again this summer.

Spurs were interested in signing Dybala last summer and had even agreed a fee with Juve to sign the Argentine. The move couldn’t go through as the player and his representatives failed to reach an agreement with Spurs for a potential transfer. It has now been reported by Gazzetta dello Sport (via FootballItalia) that the Bianconeri will accept offers of around €100m (£90 million) for La Joya.

Egan suggested that ‘it is hard to imagine’ Spurs going back in for him and they may not have the finances to do a deal for Dybala when he was asked if he could see Spurs bringing the Argentinian to north London this summer.

He said: “I’m not so sure. There’s a link with Harry Winks to Manchester City – maybe that frees up money. Obviously, [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg has come in. I think Hojbjerg is a player that Mourinho wants in midfield – a ball winner, a bit more steel. Harry Winks is more of a footballing midfielder and was kind of one of those players you identified when Mourinho took over that might be in danger of losing his place.

Can Spurs afford to sign Dybala this summer?

Yes, we can

Yes, we can

“So if Mourinho wants to get rid of him and get some funds – by all accounts, we are pretty much told Spurs don’t have money. They obviously put it all into the stadium. They can’t fill the stadium for obvious reasons at the moment. So it’s hard to imagine where they get the money to finance this.

TIF Thoughts…

Dybala was in impressive form for the Old Lady in the 2019/20 season. He played 33 Serie A games and scored 11 goals, picking up 11 assists. In all competitions, he contributed to 31 goals in 46 appearances for the Turin side. He was also named the Serie A MVP for the 2019-20 season.

He is clearly a very good player, but Spurs took a loan of £175 million from the Bank of England recently and it shows that they may not be in a good financial situation right now. So if Juve demand €100m (£90 million) for the Argentine, that might not be an amount that Spurs can afford.
