On the latest episode of the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Ricky Sacks, Lee McQueen, Antony Costa and Lucy Jones have been discussing the latest goings-on at Tottenham Hotspur, including the 3-0 friendly win against Ipswich Town last weekend and some of the transfer business they are hoping to see the North London club do before the end of the window.

One topic of conversation on the recent podcast, which was titled ‘Hojbjerg at Home‘, was the future of Spurs defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

The USA international made a rare first-team appearance in the 3-0 win against the Tractor Boys, having spent the last few seasons on loan with a variety of Championship sides (per Transfermarkt).

Which player scored Spurs' first goal of the Premier League campaign?

Here’s what McQueen had to say about the 22-year-old’s future with the Lilywhites on the podcast:

“What I would say is, based on the amount of managers that he’s had, and the lack of opportunities he’s had at Tottenham, it probably goes to show that maybe he isn’t good enough. I think he probably needs a move. It comes back down to personal preference, at the end of the day, is he going to play at Tottenham?

“You’ve got Davinson Sanchez there, you’ve got Eric Dier who has nailed his colours to the mast in terms of playing at centre-back. You’ve got Toby Alderweireld there as well. You’ve got Japhet Tanganga, who, in my opinion, is streets ahead of Cameron Carter-Vickers in the pecking order. So if he sticks around to be a fifth, maybe sixth-choice if you don’t get rid of [Juan] Foyth as well. I think if somebody comes in for him, for his development, for his career, he should move.”

TIF Thoughts…

As McQueen suggests, if Carter-Vickers wants to stay and fight for his place at Spurs, then he faces a lot of competition, so would perhaps not really be afforded many opportunities to develop.

Should Spurs sell Carter-Vickers this summer?

No

The young defender enjoyed an excellent loan spell with Luton Town in the second half of the 2019/20 Championship season, making 16 appearances and averaging a strong 6.87 rating (per Whoscored), which helped the Hatters stave off relegation, so perhaps he would be open to returning to Kenilworth Road should they submit a bid.

It will be interesting to see if the £1.8 million rated man is still a Lilywhites player come the start of the 2020/21 campaign.
