Which player scored Spurs' first goal of the Premier League campaign?

Castles spent a lot of time talking about transfers for various clubs. One of the teams he spent some time on was Spurs and the journalist revealed that the club would like to sign Doherty.

It seems that if Spurs can sell Serge Aurier, then they will try and replace him with the Republic of Ireland international.

Castles said: “I can tell you another player they’re looking for to upgrade, at present, is Matt Doherty at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who has risen to the top of the list to replace Serge Aurier in that right-back position. [Jose] Mourinho hasn’t been entirely happy about Aurier’s performances and feels that he’s a bit defensively suspect.

“If Tottenham can sell Aurier, and they’re trying very hard to move Aurier out of the club, and Italy is probably the most likely destination, then Matt Doherty would be an option to replace [Aurier] with Wolves ready to sell for the right amount of money.”

Would you be pleased if Spurs signed Doherty to replace Aurier?

TIF Thoughts…

Doherty, who is valued at £14.4m by Transfermarkt, was also reported as a transfer target for Tottenham by Alasdair Gold on the same day that the latest Transfer Window Podcast was released.

So, it looks like Spurs do have a genuine interest in signing the 28-year-old, who has scored eight goals and provided 11 assists in the last two seasons for Wolves in the Premier League.

However, if you compare Doherty’s WhoScored season rating of 6.99 from last season’s Premier League to Aurier’s season rating of 7.06 from the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, then you can see that the Ivorian performed slightly better than Doherty.

Despite this, though, it looks like Aurier may be unwanted at Spurs and if they can move him on, they might be making a move for Doherty with Wolves seemingly prepared to sell.
