Former Premier League player Don Hutchison has been discussing Tottenham Hotspur’s prospective signing of Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on ESPN FC.

Hojbjerg’s potential move to north London is thought to be edging closer, with Spurs and Southampton recently agreeing a fee.

When asked whether the capture of the Danish international would represent good business, Hutchison suggested Hojbjerg’s acquisition alone will not be enough to ensure Tottenham Hotspur have what it takes to finish inside the UEFA Champions League qualification places at the end of the 2020/21 season.

The ESPN FC pundit said: “I think it’s a good bit of business, but it’s not going to make Tottenham into a top-four side or challenge for the title.

“He’ll certainly get around the pitch, he’ll put his foot in, which Jose will absolutely love and Tottenham fans will like that because he’s very combative, but if it is just one signing and Tottenham fans are thinking this is the signing that’s going to get us into the top four – nowhere near.”

Spurs signed Eriksen in 2013 but from which team?

The 25-year-old central midfielder first arrived in the Premier League back in 2016 from the German side Bayern Munich and has since made 109 appearances in the competition, scoring four goals and providing five assists (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk).

Do you think the signing of Hojbjerg will be enough to push Spurs into a Champions League spot?

TIF Thoughts…

Hojbjerg is currently valued at £18m but has less than 12 months remaining on his contract with Southampton, a situation the Lilywhites may well have taken advantage of during negotiations. Previously the Saints’ captain, the Dane was replaced by James Ward-Prowse in June after he expressed his desire to play Champions League football (as per BBC Sport).

With regards to Hutchison’s comments, it remains to be seen how much of an impact this one individual will have on Jose Mourinho’s side, should a deal be completed. According to WhoScored.com, one of Hojbjerg’s strengths is his ability to intercept possession which in theory should improve the team overall in that particular department.
