On the latest episode of the View from the Lane podcast for The Athletic, Jack Pitt-Brooke and James Maw have been answering questions from Spurs fans regarding the upcoming season for Tottenham Hotspur.

One topic of discussion on the recent episode, which was titled: ‘Is Dele the odd one out?‘, was Spurs’ reported interest in Watford forward Troy Deeney. Following the Hornets’ relegation to the Championship, earlier this month, the Lilywhites were linked with a potential loan move for the striker, with the Daily Mail claiming that the Watford man is ‘of interest’ to Jose Mourinho.

Which player scored Spurs' first goal of the Premier League campaign?

Following the suggestion it may be ‘two years too late’ to bring Deeney to north London, here’s what Pitt-Brooke had to say about the potential signing of the 32-year-old on the podcast:

“I mean, they got [Fernando] Llorente two years too late, and he managed to contribute a bit.

“It could be a Llorente-type player and also frankly, particularly with how they play now, it might be helpful to have someone they can hit it long to if they’re 1-0 down with five minutes left. I don’t know if it’s going to happen or not, I don’t have any specific information about it. It wouldn’t be a loan because this is the last year of Deeney’s contract so Spurs would have to buy him but I don’t think he’d be very expensive. I quite like the sound of it, even just talking about it is making me more excited about the possibility of it happening.”

TIF Thoughts…

Despite Watford’s relegation last season, Deeney was in fine form for the Hertfordshire side; contributing ten goals and two assists in 27 appearances in the top-flight, which saw him comfortably rated as the Hornets’ best player across the Premier League season, averaging a 7.05 rating (per WhoScored).

Would Deeney be a good signing for Spurs?

Considering Spurs’ lack of options in attack following the injury to Harry Kane last season, you could certainly argue this one makes sense, and with the 32-year-old currently valued at £5.85 million by Transfermarkt, he surely wouldn’t prove to be too expensive as a back-up option.
