Many Newcastle United supporters have flocked to Twitter in order to respond to a recent post from Craig Hope in which he reports that the Magpies have a 30% sell-on clause for Ivan Toney.
The centre-forward was sold to Peterborough United back in August 2018 for a reported £648k (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk) and according to the Daily Mail’s football correspondent, the Toon stand to receive a financial kickback if the player’s proposed move to Brentford is completed.
Toney netted 24 times and provided six assists in League One during the 2019/20 campaign, displaying the kind of goalscoring prowess Steve Bruce’s side could do with at the moment, following the recent injury news concerning their joint-second top league goalscorer from the 2019/20 season, Dwight Gayle.
Taking his impressive goalscoring record into account, you can understand why he is close to completing a move to the Championship but what have the St. James’ Park faithful made of the update which says they stand to profit from the transfer too?
Money we will never see for sure, so not good news for #nufc Mike will be alright though

Add that to the £17million Ashley has already pocketed this summer and he can purchase another failed company that Newcastle United can advertise for free.

It’ll go the same place as the PIF deposit for the takeover.
I’m sure it’ll have good company with the £20m he was taking out of his ‘own pocket’, for the Joelinton ‘deal’.?????— MarkyMarc (@Marky_Marc77) August 27, 2020
*good news for Mike Ashley’s “purchasing more high street chains” plans.
Fixed it for you. #NUFC

Do you expect Newcastle to reinvest those funds in a striker?
Yes
No
It’s clear from the above responses that these Newcastle fans feel as though the only person who will benefit from the sell-on clause is Mike Ashley and they have very little faith that any funds received will be reinvested back into the team.
Not that they’ll invest it in the club

This tweet sums up why we deserve to be playing in division 2, this is the sort of ‘good news’ some non league team would report.

Craig Hope, in another tweet, labelled Newcastle’s striker situation as ‘desperate’ having reported that Gayle could be set for three months on the sidelines and so, along with the disappointment regarding the collapse of the proposed takeover of the club, you can understand why many of the club’s supporters are feeling frustrated.
