Chris Waugh has been speaking on the latest episode of The Athletic’s Pod On The Tyne, talking about potential transfers for the Toon.

To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

This was a special episode in which Waugh answered questions from Newcastle fans, and though lots of them were on the failed takeover of the club, others were about transfers.

One particular name that Waugh mentioned was Jeff Hendrick, who has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle in recent weeks.

Speaking on the subject of a possible move for the Irishman, Waugh said: “Jeff Hendrick is certainly someone they have looked at, I know there’s been reports in the last couple of days that it’s close, I can’t confirm or deny that – I have been trying to chase this up, but I do know that he is someone who has been, certainly over the last couple of weeks, seen as a real option.”

So, although Waugh is not sure the deal for Hendrick is as close as has been reported, he does think that Newcastle have an eye on the former Burnley man.

Do you want to sign Hendrick?

TIF Thoughts…

Hendrick left Burnley in June and is currently without a club, but he is still valued at £8.1m (as per Transfermarkt), so if the Toon were to sign him, they could be getting a player who provides value for money.

The 28-year-old made 122 Premier League appearances for Burnley, and in that time, he has scored nine goals and provided five assists.

So, while he is not the most creative player, he does have Premier League experience and would provide competition in the Toon’s midfield.

According to Waugh, he is a player that Newcastle like, but he isn’t sure if he is close to joining the club, so we will just have to see what happens in the coming days and weeks.
