ChronicleLive reporter Mark Douglas has been speaking on a recent episode of the Everything is Black and White Podcast, and has been discussing the failed takeover of Newcastle United.

To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

One of the topics that came up around Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed takeover failing is the fact that according to the consortium, the Premier League had twice told the group that the deal would be passed.

Instead, though, the process dragged on until the consortium withdrew its offer on 30th July.

This accusation from Staveley’s consortium against the Premier League led to Douglas talking about the issue.

He said: “I speak to the consortium, and they say that they’ve found it impossible to work with the Premier League – they allege that they received assurances very early on from people connected to the Premier League that this deal would go through.

“I think that’s an incredibly serious accusation that the Premier League need to answer; if that was not the case, the Premier League need to say that, because if it was the case, then why has this deal suddenly become so difficult to do?”

So, Douglas wants the Premier League to confirm if they said this or not, because it is indeed a strong accusation made by the consortium.

Do you think the Premier League gave assurances?

Yes, seems like something the Premier League would do

Yes, seems like something the Premier League would do

No, I certainly hope not

No, I certainly hope not

TIF Thoughts…

The fact that the Premier League has said nothing about this or the whole process to this point is strange, and if they had not told the consortium that the deal would be passed, then one would think they could simply come out and say this.

However, if they give these assurances, then it is no wonder that the group trying to buy Newcastle were so confident throughout the whole process until it withdrew.

This is a huge claim like Douglas suggests, and the Premier League should really comment on it.
