Chris Waugh has been speaking on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne about Henry Mauriss and how serious his interest is in buying Newcastle United.
George Caulkin joined Waugh as they both tried to dissect the failed takeover of the Toon after Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium pulled out of a deal.
One of the topics that Waugh talked about was Henry Mauriss, including what he knew about him and if his supposed interest will go anywhere.
“I’ve tried to make contact, [with Mauriss] I haven’t been able to independently verify some of the other reports out there yet, but nor have I been able to reject them, either.
“He remains a mystery sort of figure, in many ways.
“There are other groups mentioned; I know of other brokers trying to reach out to people in the North East, one of which is another US-based [group].”
It seems as if Waugh has tried and failed to find information on Mauriss, though there are other interested parties.
Do you think Mauriss will prove to be a serious bidder?
No, he will disappear now
Yes, he is just sorting everything out
TIF Thoughts…
The other group that Waugh talks about could be the group that Henry Winter referenced last week shortly after the Saudi bid’s collapse, so it will be interesting to see if that goes anywhere.
However, the focus is now on Mauriss, and he has reportedly been given until 14th August by Mike Ashley to agree a deal, while it is also thought he will be allowed to buy the club on the same terms as Staveley’s group.
Now that Staveley is out of the picture, it is up to Mauriss to prove that he can buy the Toon, but according to Waugh, there is still very little known about him.
