Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has alluded to the transfer link between Manchester United and Jadon Sancho when discussing Borussia Dortmund’s finances.
In recent months, it has been no secret that the Red Devils are keen on securing the services of Dortmund’s English attacker (per The Athletic).
According to ESPN, United ‘remain determined’ to buy the winger this summer, though talks between Sancho and the Red Devils are said to have reached an ‘impasse’.
However, in the latest episode of The Price of Football podcast, Maguire alluded to the Red Devils’ chase for Sancho when discussing Dortmund’s finances and appeared to suggest there may yet be hope for a deal to be struck.
He said: “I mean, Dortmund are a club which, as you know, has got a massive ground, it’s got a huge fanbase.
“Therefore, because they don’t have the same very cosy sponsor relationships such as the likes of Bayern Munich, they are slightly more at risk when something such as [the pandemic] comes along.
“So, their matchday income had fallen by almost a third and that had an impact straight on through their bottom line. So, in 2019 they’d made a profit of €17m, that has turned into a loss of €44m.
“They’ve still gone out – they bought [Erling] Haaland in January, they’ve just bought Jude Bellingham.
“I think Manchester United fans, however, might be looking at this information and saying, ‘Well, hold on. If Dortmund are in a position where they’re struggling to make ends meet, could this mean that a particular player [Sancho] now becomes more likely to be sold over the forthcoming window?'”
