Speaking recently on The Athletic’s Why Always Us? podcast, Manchester City correspondent Sam Lee discussed the club’s links with Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix.

According to The Athletic, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is on the search for a long-term replacement for the club’s star striker, Sergio Aguero, with it being reported that the Spaniard has a £300 million transfer budget at his disposal this summer.

Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix has been mentioned as a potential option, with City said to have been interested in the 20-year-old before he made a £113.4 million move to the Spanish side last summer, while it is also thought that Guardiola’s side have made an enquiry for the youngster.

With Felix said to be out of favour under Diego Simeone at Atletico, there could be a way in for City, although, it is also reported that they may have to pay big for the forward, due to the fee Atletico paid for him just last year.

Speaking about City’s targets on a recent episode of the Why Always Us? podcast, Lee agreed that Felix would fit the bill for Guardiola.

He said: “I mentioned before how it was a false-nine profile for a forward – that is still the case. It’s either an attacking midfielder/false nine kind of player. You know what I mean by that, you’ve immediately got a picture in your head of the type of player, I guess.

“But they have to be a clinical goalscorer as well. So I think that’s where the Joao Felix enquiry at Atletico Madrid came from. He’s that kind of player.”

TIF Thoughts…

While Felix had not been in amazing goalscoring form this season for Atletico Madrid – scoring eight goals over his 34 appearances in all competitions so far – the £72.9 million-rated man does indeed fit the bill of being a mix of an attacking midfielder/number nine, having featured predominantly as a support striker for Atletico in the 2019/20 La Liga campaign.
