Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has been talking about Manchester City’s parent company, the City Football Group (CFG) and their reported deal to buy a new European club.
This comes after Maguire recently made an appearance on The Price of Football Podcast where he spoke about a number of topics regarding the financial side of football at the moment.
After it was recently reported that CFG are in late-stage talks to buy second division French football club, ESTAC Troyes, Maguire had this to say on the matter.
He said: “They’re a bit of a yo-yo club between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 in France. They were in Ligue 1 as recently as 2018. They finished fourth in Ligue 2 in 2019 and my one concern here would be that if they did manage to get back into Ligue 1 and then qualified for [a] European place, that could cause issues if ever they were drawn in a group against Manchester City so that could have been a bit of a strange one and UEFA might have had to get involved there as well.”
As well as the Manchester City men’s and women’s teams, CFG also own New York City, as well as Melbourne City, in addition to many other clubs scattered across the world under the CFG umbrella.
Are you pleased CFG are reportedly buying a new club?
Yes
No, not really bothered
TIF Thoughts…
It’s great to hear that CFG are spreading their reach over the globe and are said to be trying to add Troyes to their collection of clubs.
Furthermore, we feel that Maguire’s suggestion that there could be an issue if Troyes were to be drawn against the Manchester club in any future European competitions does seem like a bit of a stretch at this moment in time and is probably not something that CFG need to worry about right now.
