2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

On the subject of Van den Berg, who made an appearance for the Reds in their 3-0 pre-season win over VfB Stuttgart and was named as a substitute for their 2-2 draw against Red Bull Salzburg, Taylor had this to say on the defender.

He said: “For his height, you kind of want to see him impose his physical style on the game and dominate the ball but he still looked a bit timid for such a big guy.

“I think he got sent off as well in the U19 UEFA Youth League game against Benfica and he looked a bit all over the place as well.

“He reminded me a little bit of [Mamadou] Sakho on the ball, he looked a bit unpredictable. Hopefully, he goes on to become the next [Virgil] van Dijk. I mean, if he’s played in the Eredivisie at this age, he must have something about him.”

The Reds signed Van den Berg back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Dutch side PEC Zwolle for a fee of £1.71 million.

Since then, the 18-year-old centre-half has made 12 appearances for the Liverpool U23 squad and just four appearances for the Reds’ senior team (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts…

It seems as though Taylor believes it could be a while until the teenage defender is ready to play regularly for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Hopefully, this pre-season period has provided Van den Berg with enough time for him to pinpoint what he needs to focus on in his game to be in with a chance of making it into the Liverpool squad in the future.
