Phil Egan, from Off The Ball was recently a guest on the LFC Daytrippers podcast and has been discussing Liverpool’s Belgian striker Divock Origi.

The Reds signed the 25-year-old from the French club Lille back in July 2014 in a deal reportedly worth £11.37m (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk). Since arriving on Merseyside, the forward has made 140 appearances during which he scored 34 goals and provided his teammates with 12 assists.

Origi has recently been linked with a move away from Anfield (Daily Mirror via TEAMtalk) and it seems Egan believes the club should have looked to move on the player a while back. Here is what he had to say:

“Divock Origi, he’s going to go down as a cult hero but I kind of felt they should have cashed in on him at the end of the Champions League-winning season when his stock was highest.”

Do you think Liverpool should have cashed in on Origi in 2019?

TIF Thoughts…

According to Transfermarkt, the former Lille man is valued at £14.4m, which suggests that if the Reds were to cash in on their forward they would be able to command a significant fee for him.

However, given he scored the second goal in the club’s UEFA Champions League final victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid, you can understand why Egan believes the player’s stock would have been higher at that point.

Shortly after the aforementioned European final, the player’s value was at its peak of £18m (as per Transfermarkt), backing up Egan’s point that at that stage, Liverpool would have been in a position to command a bigger transfer fee for his services.
