Liverpool journalist Paul Gorst has been sharing his thoughts on whether or not the Reds need to sign a new centre-half this summer.

This comes after Gorst recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he talked through a number of subjects related to the Merseyside club.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

On the topic of Liverpool’s current crop of defenders in their squad, Gorst had this to say on if the Reds need to buy another one during the current summer transfer window.

He said: “If you’re asking me do Liverpool need a fourth-choice centre-back, someone to come in, then most definitely, no question there. Almost Ragnar Klavan-esque if you like, someone who’s dependable, experienced and is not going to break the bank. I think that might be the type of profile that Liverpool are going to look at to come in and pad out the squad for the coming season.”

Earlier in the summer window, the Reds sold Dejan Lovren to Zenit St. Petersburg for a fee of £10.9 million. The Croatian joined the Russian side on a three-year contract.

As it stands, Liverpool currently have Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as their main senior centre-backs while they also have 18-year-old Sepp van den Berg who can play in the same position.

TIF Thoughts…

If Klopp doesn’t believe that Van den Berg or any other young defender at the club at the moment will be enough to provide adequate cover for the Reds’ senior centre-backs next season, they could well dip into the transfer market to see who could be a more appropriate fit for the squad, as Gorst suggests.
