Liverpool journalist Paul Gorst has shared an update on Reds defender Joel Matip and his future at Anfield.

This comes after Gorst recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast to go through a variety of topics concerning the Merseyside club.

Cameroonian outlet Kick442 (as per TalkSport via the Daily Mirror) has claimed PSG are interested in bringing the centre-back to France this summer for a fee of £50m.

On the subject of Matip and whether or not he could be leaving Liverpool this summer, Gorst shared his thoughts on the matter.

He said: “I wouldn’t imagine that Liverpool would entertain any offer for Joel Matip at the moment. [Liverpool have] only got about three senior centre-halves so I think it’d be crazy to let him go unless they’ve got at least another one lined up in the pipeline.”

Matip signed to Liverpool back in the 2016 summer transfer window from Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 on a free transfer.

Since then, the Cameroon international, who is currently valued at £28.8 million, has made a total of 111 appearances for the Reds in which he has managed to score five goals and provide one assist along the way (per Transfermarkt).

Unfortunately, the 2019/20 season only saw Matip make nine appearances for the Reds in the Premier League as a knee injury disrupted his campaign.

TIF Thoughts…

With Liverpool having recently sold Dejan Lovren to Zenit Saint Petersburg, it would be a surprise if they were to let Matip leave as well. Unless they have another centre-half ready to come into the squad as Gorst mentioned in the podcast.

It seems that despite his injury worries this season, Matip is in no danger of leaving the Merseyside club this summer according to Gorst.
