LFC Daytrippers contributor Grizz Khan has been discussing the future of Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum during a recent edition of the podcast.

Wijnaldum’s current contract with the club is due to expire at the end of next season and the involved parties are yet to agree on an extension.

Liverpool signed the Dutchman from Newcastle United back in July 2016 in a deal reportedly worth £24.75m (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk).

Since arriving on Merseyside, the midfielder has been crowned a European champion and more recently a Premier League winner (via Transfermarkt.co.uk). However, it remains to be seen whether or not the 2020/21 campaign will be his last with the club.

Khan shared his take on the situation, here is what he had to say:

“I can’t see him signing now, I can definitely see him staying. The thing is, the ball’s in his court now, he dictates what happens now, it’s literally down to him.

“According to what I know, the offer was on the table [and] has been since February/March. I thought he’d agreed to sign it, but obviously something’s happened or something’s changed and he’s not signed it.

“Again, with everything around Liverpool at the moment, I’m pretty calm about it either way.”

TIF Thoughts…

Wijnaldum played a key role for the Reds during the 2019/20 campaign which saw them dominate the English top flight. He started in 92% of the club’s league fixtures, making a total of 37 appearances and scoring four goals (via Transfermarkt.co.uk).

According to WhoScored.com, his average performance rating was a respectable 6.81/10 – highlighting his level of consistency throughout the campaign.

Judging by Khan’s comments he appears to believe the player could be set to leave the club at the end of next season, however, at this stage, we cannot be sure of what the future holds for Georginio Wijnaldum and his Anfield career.
