The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland has been discussing the funds that Everton will have available during the summer transfer window.

During the 2019/20 season, the Toffees spent £107.91m on incoming transfers and sealed the arrival of seven players (per Transfermarkt).

In terms of outgoings, they released four players on free transfers and sold five for a combined total of £72.45m, which left Everton with a net transfer spend of -£35.46m.

In the latest episode of The Athletic’s Gwlad Tidings podcast, Boyland discussed the current summer transfer window and the money that the Toffees have available to spend.

To kick-off this quiz on Carlo Ancelotti on the side of easy, which side was his first game on the touchline at Goodison Park against?

He said: “Everton, we’re led to believe, don’t have bountiful pots of cash. They’re going to have to be wise, prudent, bring money in.

“I don’t necessarily think or certainly Everton wouldn’t want to suggest that it’s ‘sell to buy’. They’d be quick to point out, I think, that the net spend was about £40m last summer.

“Certainly, they can’t just spend for the sake of it, there are Financial Fair Play concerns – what I mean by that is they need to adhere to Financial Fair Play, [they] lost a lot of money last season.

“So, finances are going to be tighter there. I think the [global pandemic] situation changes the landscape for most clubs unless, seemingly, you’re Chelsea and you can spend all the money in the world.

“So, the emphasis here is on Marcel Brands and his network to do their jobs, earn their corn and buy players that are going to be suitable to [Carlo] Ancelotti’s system and are going to move Everton forward.”

TIF Thoughts…

Seemingly, judging from what Boyland had to say, this summer the net transfer spend of £35.46m during the 2019/20 season is unlikely to be replicated.

Do you trust Marcel Brands to get the recruitment right this summer?

No, I really don't trust him at all

However, after the Toffees endured their worst league finish since the 2003/04 season in the most recent term (per Transfermarkt), it seems that the club is in desperate need of reinforcements.
