The Liverpool Echo reporter Sam Carroll has recently discussed the future of Everton’s Brazilian winger Bernard.

The 27-year-old forward has been situated at Goodison Park since the summer of 2018 after he joined the Toffees on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk (per Transfermarkt).

Since then, Bernard has made 66 appearances for Everton in which he has bagged just five goals and six assists (per Transfermarkt).

In the latest episode of the Liverpool Echo’s Royal Blue: The Everton FC Podcast, Carroll discussed the future of the Brazilian attacker.

To kick-off this quiz on Carlo Ancelotti on the side of easy, which side was his first game on the touchline at Goodison Park against?

He said: “I think kind of quietly, Bernard got away with being really, really underwhelming last season.

“So, it’s a funny one, isn’t it? I think we’ve just come off the back of such a poor season and there’s such a short turnaround, that a lot of players, if the right bid came in, would probably be out the door.

“In any another summer, they probably would be, but this summer, whether there [are] takers to take on the wages of [Gylfi] Sigurdsson or Bernard – two players who I think might have got a couple of sniffs in different circumstances, they probably will start the season as Everton players.

“So, [I am] now starting to think, if we [don’t] sell these lads, where does everyone play? Some of the lads might have to get used to playing on a Monday night at Southport for the Under-23s.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what Carroll had to say, he believes that in another summer Bernard may have left the Toffees, however, he’s not sure how likely that is during this transfer window.

If the choice was yours, what would you want to happen with Bernard this summer?

Judging from the fact that Bernard only delivered an uninspiring 6.56/10 average rating during the 2019/20 season in the league which made him only the joint-12th-best performer (per WhoScored), it would seem that the journalist was correct to label him “underwhelming”.

Especially when considering that the attacker managed just three goals and two assists over 27 Premier League appearances.

With two years left on his contract with the Toffees and a market value of £14.4m (per Transfermarkt), though, perhaps the 27-year-old forward could still command a decent price if he was to leave Everton.
