Talking the Blues podcast pundit Andy Costigan has been discussing the recent transfer rumour which linked Everton’s Tom Davies with Newcastle United.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Steve Bruce’s outfit are eyeing a move for the English midfielder during the current summer transfer window.

Supposedly, Bruce is a ‘big admirer’ of the 22-year-old middleman and the Toon will make a bid of around £12m to attempt to secure Davies’ services.

In the latest episode of the Talking the Blues podcast, Costigan discussed his thoughts on the transfer rumour.

He said: “There’s lots of chat about transfers and as you said, the only departure that appears to potentially be on the cards at the moment might be Tom Davies leaving for Newcastle for an alleged £12m.

“Well, that alone in itself begs a few questions in as much as, is £12m the best we could get for Tom Davies in this market when Championship players are going for that kind of money?

“Tom’s had over 100 games in the Premier League and furthermore, whilst that would be an enormous profit for Everton because he’s never cost us anything, how much is it going to cost to replace him, and replace him [with someone who can give us] immeasurably better than Tom can give us? I just, I don’t know.”

TIF Thoughts…

Seemingly, the podcast pundit does not believe that it would be a good idea for the Toffees to sell Davies to the Toon for £12m.

If Newcastle offered £12m for Tom Davies, would you want it accepted?

No, that's not a good deal

No, that's not a good deal

Yes, would be a good deal

Yes, would be a good deal

However, the English midfielder was in fairly unimpressive form for Everton during the 2019/20 season, as he only picked up a 6.47/10 average rating in the Premier League and was the side’s ninth-worst performer (per WhoScored).

That said, Davies does have three years left on his contract at Goodison Park and a market value of £14.4m, according to Transfermarkt.

So, that would suggest that Costigan could be correct that £12m falls short of how much Everton should value the 22-year-old central midfielder.
