The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe has been discussing the future of former Everton and current Wigan Athletic defender Antonee Robinson.

Last summer, Wigan secured the services of the left-back from the Toffees for a fee of £1.98m after he spent a season on loan at the DW Stadium (per Transfermarkt).

After an impressive 2019/20 season with the Latics, the American international has been strongly linked with a move to Sheffield United for £1.5m due to Wigan’s financial struggles (per The Sun).

So, in the latest episode of the All Together Now podcast, O’Keeffe discussed the former Everton youngster and whether or not it was a mistake for the Toffees to let him go.

He said: “On the surface of it, you can look at it and you can use it to bash the club. We need a left-back and there’s this young USA international who was close to going to AC Milan and now he’s going to a club that finished above us in the table.

“But I think you’ve got to be fair in terms of circumstances, here. When he was allowed to go, Marcel Brands and the club took a view that he wasn’t good enough for Everton.

“At that time, they were hopeful that Leighton Baines was going to stay, probably [the] messages from Baines [were] that he was going to, and then obviously now, with hindsight, fast forward and it looks like probably not the best decision to let him leave permanently to Wigan.

“In terms of having to spend more money that they seemingly don’t have [on a left-back] then that might give them pause for thought, I wonder how much they might regret it.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, following Baines’ retirement, O’Keeffe wonders if the club regrets selling Robinson last summer after seeing his development over the most recent season.

Did Everton make a mistake when they sold Antonee Robinson last summer?

Yes, he should have stayed

No, it was the right move

No, it was the right move

Certainly, the American proved himself in the Championship by picking up a 7.09/10 average rating over 38 appearances during the 2019/20 season (per WhoScored).

Furthermore, with AC Milan having shown interest in the left-back previously and the Blades and West Bromwich Albion currently keen (per The Sun), it certainly appears as though the Toffees made a mistake.
