Speaking recently on the Eagles-focused Five Year Plan podcast, Kevin Day suggested that Crystal Palace are likely to get £40 million less than they would have done had they sold Wilfried Zaha last year.

Zaha has been at the centre of a number of transfer rumours in recent seasons, with the 27-year-old stating that he wanted to leave Selhurst Park last summer ‘in the hope of playing European football‘.

Arsenal then bid £40 million for the winger, a figure which was turned down by Palace, as it was reported they valued the Ivory Coast international at ‘closer to £100 million’.

It was also reported that Everton made two attempts to sign Zaha that summer, however, Roy Hodgson later confirmed that the winger would be remaining in south London, as no clubs had matched their valuation of the player.

However, rumours began to emerge again close to the end of this Premier League season regarding a possible exit for Zaha, with the Palace manager all but confirming that the 27-year-old would be leaving the club over the summer.

And on a recent episode of the Five Year Plan podcast, Day stated that he believes that Palace will receive substantially less than what they would have done if they had sold Zaha last summer.

He said: “[We’re] probably [going to get] £40 million less than we would have got this time last season, because Steve Parish valued him at £80 million this time last year, which was probably optimistic a little bit, but you would have expected £65-70 million, I think you’re looking at £35-40 million [this summer]. I still think Everton is the most persistent rumour. I think if Everton are the only club [in for Zaha] then I think he will go.”

TIF Thoughts…

Considering the toll the global pandemic has had on the financial health of football clubs around the world, it would indeed appear likely that, as Day states, should Palace sell Zaha this summer, they will receive considerably less than what they would have received for the player last summer.
