In a recent article for The Athletic, Matt Woosnam provided an update on the current situation of Crystal Palace goalkeeper, Vicente Guaita.
Since making the move to Palace from Spanish side Getafe CF on a free transfer back in 2018, Guaita has gone on to make 59 appearances for the Eagles, conceding 68 goals and keeping 20 clean sheets.
Last season, the 33-year-old made 35 appearances in the Premier League, conceding 42 goals and keeping 10 clean sheets, averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.69 – rating him as the club’s joint seventh-best player in the league.
As a result of his fine form, it has been reported that there is interest in his services from Spain, with Real Betis said to be keen on offering the Spaniard a route back to his home country – something which it has been reported that Guaita would be ‘delighted‘ with.
However, Matt Woosnam stated that this is likely to be a ploy for an improved contract in south London, as he wrote in a recent article:
“The much-loved goalkeeper, Vicente Guaita, is another whose contract only has a year to run. Palace have an option to extend it by a further year, although there have been murmurings that the Spaniard is interested in a move away.
“Given the contract situation and his imperious form, it may be that this is more likely an attempt to prise a more lucrative contract from his current employers. There is no reason to believe he is unsettled at the club and he has fully established himself as a firm favourite among supporters.”
Would you be happy for Palace to sell Guaita this summer?
Yes
No
TIF Thoughts…
As such, it would appear that Woosnam is of the belief that Guaita is more than happy in south London, and is by no means unsettled at the club.
Considering the fact that Woosnam also refers to the shot-stopper as a ‘firm favourite among supporters’, one can only assume that this news regarding Guaita is music to the ears of Palace fans.
