According to recent reports, Crystal Palace have seen a bid refused amid ‘ongoing’ talks for Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The reports by RMC Sport journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi (via Sport Witness) state that Palace have had a ‘first offer refused’ by the German side, however, that ‘negotiations continue between the two clubs’.

Crystal Palace fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Palace 19/20 season quiz. We'll start off with an easy one... Which side did Palace face on the opening day of the 19/20 Premier League season?

The 23-year-old is said to be ‘one of several forwards the club have discussed’ this summer, as Roy Hodgson looks to improve the attacking areas of his squad, following a season in which the Eagles managed to score just 31 league goals – a record better than only bottom of the table Norwich City.

Mateta, who joined Mainz from Lyon in a £7.2 million deal back in 2018, has gone on to make 54 appearances for the Bundesliga side, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists.

Last season, the Frenchman featured 18 times in the league, scoring three goals and providing one assist, averaging a slightly disappointing WhoScored match rating of 6.46.

However, the striker missed a large part of the season due to a torn meniscus.

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen from their goalscoring record last season, it is evident that Palace do need to strengthen upfront before the start of next term.

However, considering the fact that the £15.75 million-rated Mateta scored just three league goals last season, as well as having suffered quite a bad injury, it could be argued that it may be wise for Palace to turn their attention to a forward who enjoyed a rather more prolific campaign, in order for the South London club to have the best chance at hitting the ground running next term.
