Charles Watts, the Arsenal correspondent for Goal, discussed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract situation during a recent video on his YouTube channel.

The 31-year-old was the hero in last weekend’s FA Cup final, scoring a brace for the Gunners which ultimately led to his club lifting the famous old trophy for a record 14th time (via BBC Sport). During the 2019/20 campaign, Aubameyang enjoyed an impressive season of Premier League football, scoring 22 goals and providing three assists in 36 appearances (via Transfermarkt).

The Gabonese forward’s current Arsenal contract is due to expire at the end of next season and therefore, there is some uncertainty with regard to his future. The north London club, we believe, will be hoping this recent triumph will go some way in persuading their talisman that he should stay at the Emirates Stadium.

Here is what Watts had to say about the contract negotiations between the involved parties: “Arsenal and Aubameyang both wanted to wait until after the cup final, until after the season had finished. We’re there now, and a contract offer will be submitted to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang imminently. Mikel Arteta has been sending out positive messages, he thinks Aubameyang wants to stay from the discussions he’s had, but now it’s down to the Arsenal hierarchy to get that deal done.

“Aubameyang is on about £200k a week at the moment, that’s what he’s been on since he joined from Borussia Dortmund. This new deal, if he does agree to it, will be a substantial increase on that, probably around the £250k a week mark – it’ll be a three-year contract and that offer is going to be made in the coming days.”

TIF Thoughts…

Since arriving at the Emirates Stadium back in January 2018 in a deal reportedly worth £57.38m, the forward has netted 70 times in 109 appearances (via Transfermarkt). His goal record alone highlights his value to the club and we can assume most associated with the Gunners will be desperate to see him commit his future to the Arsenal.
