Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has recently discussed the financial income of Arsenal during the 2019/20 season compared to their North London rivals.

Maguire suggested that Tottenham Hotspur benefitted from being in the Champions League in the most recent season, whilst Mikel Arteta’s side made significantly less revenue from playing in the Europa League.

The football finance expert was talking on the latest episode of the Tottenham-focused Last Word on Spurs podcast with Ricky Sacks and Lee McQueen.

During the podcast, which was titled: ‘Tottenham Hotspur – Behind the Finances’, Maguire was keen to compare the financial situation at Arsenal with that of their North London rivals.

Can you score 20/20 on this Premier League quiz? Starting off easy, who is the top scorer in the Premier League this season?

Here’s what he had to say about the two clubs, and the difference in their finances, on the podcast:

“Spurs, last season, they made £63 million more than Arsenal. Now, you’ve got roughly the same size stadium, so, that’s not going to be a huge difference.

“If you take a look at the numbers, Arsenal made more money from matchday than Spurs but the broadcast money on the back of Spurs getting into the Champions League; Spurs [made] £243 million, Arsenal [made] £183 million, so there’s that £60 million that makes a substantial difference.”

TIF Thoughts…

Maguire certainly seems to feel that the money made from being in the Champions League can make a substantial difference to a club’s finances and feels being in the Champions League last season seriously benefitted Spurs, despite being knocked out in the first knockout round by RB Leipzig (per BBC).

Are you shocked that Arsenal made so much less from playing in the Europa League?

With both sides set to compete in the Europa League during the 2020/21 campaign, Arsenal will no doubt be hoping that there won’t be as substantial a difference between the two sides in terms of finances next season, especially considering the financial impact of the current viral outbreak.
