Joe Thomlinson, Dougie Critchley and Chris Hamill spent some time talking about West Bromwich Albion following their promotion to the Premier League for the 2020/21 campaign during the latest edition of Football Daily’s Sunday Vibes and one of the topics of discussion that came up during the show was the possibility of the Baggies making an approach to sign Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard.

Vestergaard has been linked with a move away from St. Mary’s this summer. Back in July, Goal reported that Leicester City would be making ‘a renewed approach’ for the defender. This article claimed that the 28-year-old is available for less than the £26m than the Saints were allegedly asking for him in January.

As well as that, Goal also claimed that ‘several other’ parties would be poised to make a move for Vestergaard should the Foxes fail to agree on a deal with the Saints and during this recent edition of Football Daily’s Sunday Vibes, Critchley shared that he thinks West Brom should consider a move for the Danish centre-back, who is currently valued at £10.8m, as per Transfermarkt.

He said: “I’d say they need a standout centre-back because we saw [Ahmed] Hegazi in his first stint in the Premier League. [He’s] a useful player in the opposition box, but pretty immobile.

“I was thinking [of] centre-backs that could be available for West Brom – maybe Vestergaard. I know that he had that spell out of the team at Southampton under Ralph Hasenhuttl, though he did come back into it in the last three or four games as well. Potentially they could get him for quite a cut-price fee.”

TIF Thoughts…

Considering that reports have claimed that Vestergaard’s valuation has dropped, it may be understandable why Critchley believes that the Baggies could sign him for “a cut-price fee.” However, considering that, according to WhoScored, West Brom centre-back Kyle Bartley was the Baggies’ fourth-highest-rated player in the Championship for the 2019/20 campaign and his central defensive partner Semi Ajayi was West Brom’s joint-fifth-highest-rated player in the league during the most recent season, it might be questionable if the centre-back position really is a major area of concern for the Baggies ahead of the 2020/21 season.
