Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has been discussing the points deduction which was handed to Sheffield Wednesday by the EFL.

At the end of last month, it was revealed that the Owls would begin the 2020/21 Championship season with a 12-point deduction (per BBC).

The Yorkshire side was handed the deduction by an independent disciplinary panel for ‘breaking spending rules’, which the club was said to be “extremely disappointed” with.

So, in the latest episode of The Price of Football podcast, Maguire discussed the latest regarding the Owls’ points deduction and if they will appeal it.

We will look at Marcelo Bielsa to kick off this quiz on the Championship's managers, which of these national teams has the Leeds United boss managed?

He said: “If Wednesday do decide to have an appeal, and they’ve got 14 days from the original [charge] date, I think the only issue from their point of view would be the costs in relation to having an appeal.

“They would be obliged to pay the EFL’s costs and the costs of holding the tribunal.

“In respect to Wigan, remember we thought it was in the region £400,000-£500,000 [for their appeal], that’s the figure that’s been quoted by the press.

“From Wednesday’s point of view, is £400,000-£500,000 worth 12 points in the Championship? My gut reaction [is] that it would be.

“Until we see the long form of the agreement or the long form of the judgement from the tribunal, I think they’re probably holding fire at present.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what Maguire had to say, seemingly the only issue for the Owls if they were to appeal their points deduction would be the cost of the appeal.

With the 14-day mark fast approaching, the latest update from Ricky Charlesworth for Yorkshire Live suggested that the club had not yet made a decision regarding such a move.
