Sheffield Wednesday journalist Dom Howson has shared his thoughts about the Owls potentially bringing in a new director of football for the club.

This comes after Howson recently made an appearance on Singing The Blues, a Wednesday-themed podcast, to talk through a range of topics concerning Garry Monk’s side.

On the subject of potentially bringing in a new director of football this summer, Howson shared his thoughts on this potential move for the club.

He said: “For me, what’s more important at the football club – I’d like to see them bring someone in, [but] is not actually a director of football – I want to see a chief executive come in. I want someone to come in behind the scenes to take some of the burdens, take some of the strain, stress away from the chairman, for them to come into a position of power and make decisions, so that it doesn’t all fall maybe perhaps as much as what it does right now on the chairman’s shoulders.

“I think that, for me, when you’re looking at hiring somebody, bringing somebody in, I think that, personally, is way more important than bringing in a director of football.”

Wednesday ended their 2019/20 Championship campaign in 16th place on the league table on 56 points, below Reading and Stoke City on goal difference.

However, it was announced at the end of July that the club are going to be deducted 12 points from the start of their 2020/21 campaign after they were found to have breached spending rules by ‘including the sale of their Hillsborough Stadium home in their 2017/18 accounts despite the ground being sold a year later’ (per BBC Sport).

What do Wednesday need to bring in this summer?

TIF Thoughts…

It’s intriguing to hear Howson’s views on what he thinks Wednesday need to do and what positions they need to fill at the top level at the club going forward.

It will be interesting to see if the club does bring in a new chief executive as Howson suggested or perhaps a new director of football and whether or not their 12-point deduction will have any impact on any potential decisions surrounding the matter.
