Journalist Alison McConnell has recently been talking about Celtic youngster Karamoko Dembele and has made an interesting claim about the Hoops starlet.

McConnell was recently a guest on the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show and one topic of debate was Dembele and his future at Parkhead. McConnell was full of praise for the youngster and she even revealed that many Premier League clubs were looking at Dembele at one point.

Starting with an easy one- apart from Paris Saint-Germain, which other French club did Edouard play for?

Dembele is a product of the Celtic youth academy and has risen through the ranks at Parkhead. He joined the club’s Under-18s team in 2018 and made it to the club’s reserves team in the summer of 2019 (via Transfermarkt).

McConnell, who was asked about Dembele and whether he should pick Scotland above England when it comes to international representation, said: “He looks as though he’s bulked up a bit, too, [he is] obviously very, very young and very new to coming in to playing first-team football and playing senior football. I think he’s trained a fair bit with the first team but it is a completely new experience. I think you have to be patient. I think he’s a precocious talent, I think he’s a boy that we’ve all known about for the last three or four years just because he’s been so exceptional at every age group he’s played in.

Do you think Celtic can lose Dembele soon?

I think so

I think so

“He’s been coveted by other clubs; I think it was a coup for Celtic to keep him and keep him on a professional contract. I know there were a number of Premier League clubs sniffing about. I hear what you’re saying about Scotland and England, but I think his priority at the minute is to just to make a pathway into the first team.”

McConnell has high praise for Dembele and believes that it was great for Celtic to keep him, despite interest from Premier League clubs in the 17-year-old youngster.

TIF Thoughts…

Dembele has already made three first-team appearances for Celtic so far. He played for the Hoops in a Europa League game against CFR Cluj last season and even played in a Premiership game against Ross County. Before that, he made a league appearance against Hearts back in 2019 (via Transfermarkt).

The 17-year-old is currently the youngest ever Celtic player to feature in European competition and is the youngest ever to play for a Scottish team in Europe. He even scored in Celtic’s recent pre-season friendly game against Hibernian and helped the side win 3-1 on the day.

All these are promising signs for the player. If Celtic really did fend off interest from Premier League sides to keep Dembele, they can only hope that all of it pays off soon.
