Former Celtic captain Paul Lambert has been having his say on the situation involving Leigh Griffiths after it was reported the striker will not be joining the rest of the Hoops’ squad for their pre-season fixtures in France (as per BBC Sport).

The Hoops are scheduled to take on Nice, Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain between now and the end of the month but having returned to training last month ‘out of condition and over his optimum playing weight’ (via The Daily Record), the 29-year-old has been left back at Lennoxtown.

Starting with an easy one- apart from Paris Saint-Germain, which other French club did Edouard play for?

Lambert, speaking on a recent episode of the BBC’s Scottish Football podcast, believes some of his teammates should pull him up, here is what the 50-year-old had to say:

“The player has to look after himself. You’d want the dressing room to pull him in line or phone him up and say ‘what are you doing?’

“If you want to win and be successful, you have to have a bit of a nasty streak in you and say this is not good enough. For the size of the club, it’s a worldwide club, it’s not a small, small club Celtic, it’s worldwide. You’re letting so many people down if you’re not on top of your game.”

Do you believe Leigh Griffiths' teammates should have pulled him up?

TIF Thoughts…

Griffiths missed part of last season through injury and personal problems (as per BBC Sport) but we can infer from Lambert’s comments that in his view, there is no excuse for the player returning to training in such poor condition.

During his time with Celtic, Lambert won four Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups (via Transfermarkt) and it appears he believes other members of the dressing room should have stepped in and let Griffiths know that it’s simply not good enough.
