Spurs fans on Twitter have been reacting to some quotes from Jose Mourinho following the win against Newcastle United earlier this week.
The 57-year-old spoke about Steven Bergwijn, who came off the bench to provide an assist for Harry Kane’s second-half goal, but wasn’t too happy with the nature of a journalist’s question over his omission from the starting lineup.
He said (per Football Daily via Last Word On Spurs): “That is the question that normally you do to me, but you don’t do to Frank Lampard, to Jurgen Klopp, to Pep [Guardiola], to all the coaches of the big clubs with big players. Frank Lampard plays [Christian] Pulisic, you don’t ask him why he doesn’t start [Callum Hudson-] Odoi or something; Pep plays this guy and [keeps] Bernardo Silva on the bench, you never ask about Bernardo Silva.”
Since joining Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window, the Dutch international has made eight starts in the Premier League, with four appearances from the bench.
In that time, he has contributed three goals and one assist, whilst Lucas Moura, who made way for the attacker on Wednesday, has just four goals and two assists in 33 appearances (per WhoScored), so you can perhaps understand the journalist’s question as to why the Brazilian started ahead of the Dutchman against Newcastle.
Who would you rather see start?
Moura
Bergwijn
Reaction from Spurs fans to the quotes from Mourinho can be seen in the tweets below.
I have always been baffled when managers are questioned about their team selection. ESPECIALLY after they’ve won. The manager knows his team best, not these clueless reporters.

Some of the Spurs journalists are embarrassing. I am itching to name names here because since Jose took over they’re a hung on trying to get negative stories off him. I am a big fan of Poch but the team on a daily basis has a manager who’s decisions have to be respected

One Spurs fan particularly enjoyed Mourinho not mentioning Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta in his list of big team managers.
Jose not mentioning Arteta as a “big club” mange
