Spurs fans on Twitter have been reacting to the reported news that the North London club will not be renewing Jan Vertonghen and Michel Vorm’s contracts, and the departure of both players will be announced following the game against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
According to Football Insider (via The Spurs Web), both Vertonghen and Vorm will depart on the expiry of their contracts, following Spurs’ final game of the season at Selhurst Park on Sunday. It will bring an end to Vertonghen’s eight-year spell with the Lilywhites, having joined from Ajax in 2012. In that time, the Belgian international has gone on to make 315 appearances for the club; contributing 14 goals and seven assists (per Transfermarkt).
Vorm, meanwhile, has made just 48 appearances for the North London club in his time there, and with just one appearance to his name this season, you would imagine that he wouldn’t be as big a miss as Vertonghen. The former Ajax man has featured on 23 occasions in the Premier League this season; averaging a fairly solid 6.79 rating (per Whoscored), but it seemingly wasn’t enough for a new contract, and the 33-year-old has also been linked with a surprise move to Manchester City.
Do you feel the club are making a mistake in letting Vertonghen leave?
Yes
No

That’s disgraceful treatment particularly for Jan – yet again my club finds a way to be nasty. he is someone who has served the club with pride & honour for the best part of his footballing life.

Jan deserves better – loyal servant – solid player – should have been captain.

Very sad that we haven’t been able to say goodbye to Jan. He’s been a fantastic servant to the club.

The last game Jan started for us he helped keep a clean sheet. I’m not convinced he’s past his best yet. He did really well at LB earlier in the season as well.

Overall, it seems as if the majority of Spurs fans are sad to see Vertonghen go, but with Eric Dier having been handed a new deal, and talks ongoing with Japhet Tanganga, Spurs perhaps feel they are well-stocked in the centre-back position.
