In the latest video on his YouTube channel, Football.london reporter Alasdair Gold has had his say on Giovani Lo Celso’s potential injury concern and his future role in the team following Spurs’ win against Newcastle United earlier this week.

The Argentinian was taken off for the third game in a row against the Toon, although he was able to provide his first Premier League assist for the north London club in the 3-1 win. The 24-year-old has established himself as a regular in Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven since signing permanently from Real Betis in the January transfer window.

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? - Who did Spurs beat in the opening fixture?

Here’s what Gold had to say about why the Argentinian may have been replaced against Newcastle, and where he would like to see him play going forward:

“For me, Lo Celso, especially with the first goal, proved to me, I really do think, especially just for these last two games, he’s struggling a little bit with a groin injury, but give him a go in the [Christian] Eriksen role. I think that for me, would be the next step to just pushing on from the solid foundation thing and creating more chances for [Harry] Kane. As soon as Lo Celso gets around the opposition box, things happen.”

TIF Thoughts…

Last season saw Lo Celso contribute nine goals and four assists for Real Betis in La Liga (per WhoScored), suggesting that he can be an attacking force if used further up the pitch. Perhaps next season we will see the 24-year-old feature in more of an ‘Eriksen role’ for Jose Mourinho’s side, although he would do well to replicate the Danish international’s impressive return for the north London club.

Before leaving to join Inter in the January transfer window, the former Ajax man contributed 69 goals and 89 assists in 305 appearances for the Lilywhites (per Transfermarkt).

With regards to Lo Celso’s groin injury, perhaps we will see him rested for Spurs’ final two Premier League games, especially now it is mathematically impossible for them to finish in the top four – while it remains to be seen whether he can truly be a worthy successor to Eriksen in Tottenham’s midfield.
